November 2019 Movie Night

Screening of “Gender Revolution”, a National Geographic documentary (2017) on Tuesday November 12  at the East Mississauga Community Health Centre. Thank you to all who were able to attend and be a part of the evening.  Gender Revolution can be found on Netflix. Katie Couric, an American journalist “sets out across America to meet with leading scientists, physicians, and experts to answer questions about gender and gender identity. She speaks with everyday people who find their lives and bodies on the front line of a rapidly changing world. This film examines the role of science, society, and culture on gender, shedding light on stories of struggle, understanding, ignorance, and love.“         

                               

February 2019 PFLAG Mississauga Speaker Series: My LGBTQ Child and My Faith:  Do I Have To Choose Between Them?

Parents of LGBTQ children often feel that their faith is being challenged
when their child comes out to them. However there are an increasing
number of faith groups who are reconsidering their traditional stance
and have become inclusive and welcoming of LGBTQ individuals.  Guest speakers Joanne Hedge, Minister of Applewood United Church in Mississauga, and Laura Wolfson, former Educator and Cantor of Temple Anshe Sholom (Reform Judaism) in Hamilton provided insights about the changes occurring within their own communities. We also viewed a TEDx Talk by El–Farouk Khaki, co-founder and Imam of El-Tawhid Juma Circle in Toronto. Thank you to the EMCHC for offering their Community Room for the event.

 

Oct 2018  PFLAG Mississauga Speaker Series: Mental Health Issues Affecting LGBTQ Individuals and Their Families  

On Oct 23 Will Rowe provided participants with information about depression, anxiety, and suicide risks for LGBTQ individuals. Will, MSW (Master, Social Work), is a community health worker at the East Mississauga Community Health Centre, a trans man and a parent. Will shared his story, as did a mother of a trans youth, and a young transman. Thank you to the EMCHC for offering their Community Room for the event.

 

July 2018  Pride BBQ Event hosted by the      East Mississauga Community Health Centre

On July 14  PFLAG Mississauga  enjoyed a fun afternoon that included  good food, watching great performances, and talking with visitors who stopped by to say hi.

 

July 2018 Peel Pride – Brampton

On July 8  PFLAG Mississauga was pleased to be a part of Brampton’s first Pride event that included  live entertainment, art and performances, and a variety of community exhibitors.

 

June 2018 PFLAG Mississauga Speaker Series: What Does It Mean to be Two-Spirited?

On June 19 Seán Kinsella provided participants with insight into what  it means to be Two-Spirited with a cultural and historical perspective. Seán is a First Nations individual who holds a Masters Degree in Education and is an educator, program coordinator, and a writer. Thank you to the East Mississauga Community Health Centre for offering their Community Room for the event.

 

Summerfest 2018 hosted by Dixie Bloor Neighborhood Centre

On June 23 PFLAG Mississauga set up a booth next to other community organizations in the arena at the Burnhamthorpe Community Centre. Wendie and Carolyn enjoyed the music, dance performances, food, and meeting the individuals and families who stopped by to say hi.

 

June 2018 Scotiabank Pride event

PFLAG Mississauga was invited to speak at a Lunch and Learn at Scotiabank’s corporate office in Mississauga on June 14  about The Importance of Allies. Many thanks to Scotiabank for their generous donation.

 

 March 2018 Movie night

PFLAG Mississauga participated in the school’s Mental Health Day on 26 Feb 2018. Many thanks to the principal James Kardash and parent council for the invitation.
