Growing up in Ghana, I knew I was different yet…not the kind of difference that I understood, which was further challenged by not being able to find an adult to be confident in, in a setting that I now know is homophobic.
Even over 30 years of living in Canada, a country where diversity is celebrated, because of my affiliations and associations to my Ghanaian community, churches and the society at large, I still did not know that I could freely live. I want to share the joy I have when I see others freely living and being accepted, particularly when it is someone of a younger generation.
Recently, I had the pleasure to attend an open house event, where I met some incredible people of all ages, from the organizer that greeted me, to the people working in the building and the attendees and their respective families, and other representatives from community organizations.
I was delighted seeing those beautiful and colourful faces of those who were so excited to visit my table. They were eager to have one of the many pride lanyards, wristbands and stickers I had to offer at my table. Before I knew it, our stock was depleted!
The most memorable and heart warming part of the evening for me, were the young attendees that came straight to my table with so much excitement and joy. One said “Can I have more than one wristband? I love rainbows, I am a lesbian”. All the joy in my body screamed out “Yeah!” Next another young attendee, while holding on to one of our trans flags, asked “May I have this? I love the colours because I am also trans.” I was super excited to see purpose and meaning in my presence at the event. Along with all those who were glad to have free items from my table, I was happy to see young people finding themselves in a place where they found acceptance. I did tell them that I am a lesbian, and they jumped for joy. I gave each of them a high five for being themselves. One shared that this was the first time seeing a display of 2LGBTQIA+ pride at an event. A parent came over to thank me. One asked, “So, have you found a girlfriend yet?” I replied “oh, I am married, I have a wife.” A switch went on and they were full of excitement!
There is meaning and purpose in what we all do in the community, and I encourage us all to use our abilities intentionally in these spaces. You never know the impact that your words and actions can have on others!
